クロスボウブローチはローマ軍が持ち込んだもので、兵士のマントを留めるファスナーの両脇、胸にふたつの留め金(フィビュラ）として実用的に用いられたもの、あるいは高位の兵士を埋葬する際副葬品として用いられたもの。現存するものに摩耗した痕跡がないため、後者の目的ではないかと思われる。形がボウガンに近いことから、こう呼ばれる。 5世紀になってローマ帝国が衰退し、北からアングロサクソン人が侵入してくると、使用されなくなった。銀製、青銅製のものが多いが、重さを軽減するために中は空洞になっている。また、大英博物館には黄金製でラテン語の碑文まで刻まれた逸品も陳列されている。ローマ軍のものをケルト的に応用したRoman-Britishと呼ばれる様式もある。中にはケルトの猛々しい戦士を象徴する胴体が長い猪の形をもつ青銅製のブローチも現存する。紹介したものはバネが長いコイル状を呈している。
Crossbow brooches, which were brought into Britain by the Roman Empire in the third century, were used as fibula to fasten the soldier’s mantle or as grave goods in the high-ranking officer’s grave. Its shape looks like a bow gun: hence the naming of crossbow brooch. Made of either silver or bronze, it had a hollow structure to reduce the weight. In the fifth century, when Anglo-Saxons started invasion from north, which resulted in the Roman retreat, it disappeared. The British Museum has on display a spectacular gold example with a Latin inscription. My crossbow variant in Romano-British style shows the shape of a wild boar, symbolizing a Celtic warrior, with a coil mechanism.
