Mauchline book bindings 2/2

The technique of Mauchline ware, launched near Glasgow in the middle of the 18th century, was soon applied to nationalistic book binding, often with patriotistic figures of Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns or their enormous monuments set in the centre, surrounded by Scottish tartan checks. Near the top of the binding, the names of tartan holders such as Stuart, Lorne and Forbes, were struck in gold. There is a museum in Mauchline, while the Mauchline Ware Collectors’ Club is run in USA. Mauchline Ware: A Collector’s Guide has been published.
