1976年4月、サザビーズのA. N. L. マンビー旧蔵書の競売で、『ケンブリッジ大学コーパス・クリスティ・コレッジの歴史』と同コレッジ所蔵『中世写本目録』の未製本シートを納めた布製ボックスが、１４ポンド（邦価７千円）で落札された。その数倍の見積価格だったにも拘らず、誰も関心を示さず、私が獲得した。キングズ・コレッジの図書館長だったマンビーは、書誌学のクラスでフォーマット（判型）、割り付け（インポジション）、単葉（シングルトン）などを教える際に用いたに違いない。なお、第2次世界大戦中ドイツ軍の捕虜として過ごしたマンビーは、キングズの学長だった写本学者M.R. ジェイムズに倣って、怪奇小説を書いていた。
In April 1976, a large cloth box containing one set each, in unbound sheets, of Masters’s History of Corpus Christi College Cambridge and Nasmith’s catalogue of medieval manuscripts at CCCC were knocked down at 14 pounds sterling at Sotheby’s sale of A. N. L. Munby’s library. Neither librarians, booksellers, nor collectors but I was interested in the lot. Munby had added four unbound sheets of small formatted works from the 16th to the 18th century. The Librarian of King’s College Cambridge, he must have shown them to students in his class of bibliography.
