博士と狂人　The Professor and the Mad Man

原題The Professor and the Mad Man, Simon Winchesterの原作をMel Gibson主演で映画化したもので、昨日DVDで観ました。19世紀に半ばに始まったOxford English Dictionaryの編纂をめぐる実話を元に、最後は美しいヒューマン・ドキュメントになっています。
私の関心はアメリカ生まれのギブソンが、スコットランドの仕立て屋の息子が辞書の編纂者としてどういう訛りかとだったのですが、残念ながら地方訛りはほとんどなし。むしろ夫人役の女優の方がよい味を出していました。
英語史の授業で見せるには最適です。F. J. Furnivallがあまり個性的に描かれたいないのでがっかりでしたが。。。

The Professor and the Madman is a 2019 American film directed by Farhad Safinia, based on the 1998 book The Surgeon of Crowthorne (published in USA as The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester). It stars Mel Gibson and Sean Penn.

The film is about Professor James Murray, a Scotsman with no educational background, who in 1879 became director an Oxford University Press project, The New English Dictionary (now known as The Oxford English Dictionary) to supersede Samuel Johnson’s English dictionary (1755) and the man who became his friend and colleague, W. C. Minor, a surgeon who, as a volunteer reader, submitted more than 10,000 entries while he was confined at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum at Crowthorne after being found not guilty of the murder at Lambeth due to insanity.
